How to work an insurance aging backlog

| 1 | Pull the aging report. Start with claims over 30 days old. Sort them by payer, and by why they are still open: no reply yet, a denial, a secondary not sent, or a payment that looks short. |
| 2 | Follow up with the payer. Use the payer portal or a phone call. Write the status on the claim so the next pass does not start over. |
| 3 | Clear denials. Correct and resubmit a denial you can fix. Appeal the ones you cannot, before the payer deadline. |
| 4 | Send secondaries. When the primary pays, send the secondary claim. A secondary left unsent is a common reason an aging report stays long. |
| 5 | Check underpayments. Compare the payment to your fee schedule before you write anything off. |
